DAVID FISHER AND MARK ANDREWS, ROOM 50 OR OUTSIDE
SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO
This original educational theatre show is a collaboration between Mark Andrews of SO(U)L
Sharing One Language, and David Fisher and Lenka Fisherová of The Bear Educational
Theatre. It follows the story of a girl from Eastern Europe who has an English father. The
father died when she was young and, at the start of the show, she has never been to
Britain or had any connection with her British roots. She has never felt the need to.
However, the death of her uncle and an unusual inheritence lead her to travel and
discover more about Britain and more about herself at the same time.
One main aim of the show is to introduce modern Britain in an interesting way. However,
it is designed to be of especial interest to students in the later years of secondary school
as it asks key questions about personal/national identity. Who are we? Are we defined by
our nation? By our family? It also asks an even more key question, should they stay athome or go and travel? The show has value for teachers too as it contains a lot of
interesting methodology from some experienced teacher-trainers.
